The Government’s Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) is a £107m grant support programme that opened to applicants in February 2023.
It provides funding to public, private and third sector applicants in England and Wales, to support improvements to existing district heating or communal heating projects for customers and operators.
Projects can apply for either revenue grant funding or capital grant funding.
Here are some of the successful projects that have received funding.
HNES Funded Revenue Studies
- Barrington Court
Barrington Court heat network, constructed in 2008, serves 74 residential units in London.
- Baths Court
Baths Court is a care and retirement housing scheme built in 1984, within the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
- University of Chichester
The University of Chichester (Bishop Otter Campus) is served by a district-style heat network believed to date pre 1980s.
- Clive Lloyd House
Clive Lloyd House is a Notting Hill Genesis sheltered housing scheme located in Haringey, London, N15.
- Glen Lodge Extra Care Flats 1-32
Glen Lodge is an extra care scheme that provides accommodation and care to older council tenants with support needs.
- Hutton Lodge
Hutton Lodge relies on a 4-pipe heat network constructed around 1989 to provide heating and hot water to 28 dwellings.
- City Park West
City Park West is a large Notting Hill Genesis development located in Chelmsford in Essex, CM1.
- Reservoir & Watersreach
Reservoir and Watersreach (R&W) is a Notting Hill Genesis (NHG) block located at Woodberry Down Estate in Hackney, London.
- Riverside Dene
The Riverside Dene heat network in Newcastle Upon Tyne supplies heat to 541 homes across six residential towers.
- One Friargate
One Friargate is part of the Coventry District Energy Network, and provides communal heating, hot water, and cooling to several tenants.
- Council House
Coventry City Council’s Council House is connected to the Coventry District Energy Network. The communal heating and hot water system serves multiple customers within the building.
HNES Funded Capital Studies
- University of Liverpool
The University of Liverpool was established in 1881 and is home to 30,000 students, 8,000 international students, and employs 7,800 staff. The University spends approximately £16 million per year on energy costs.
- Vega Building
The Vega building is a 13-year-old development comprising 40 homes located just off the seafront in Hove. Southern Housing’s benchmarking revealed that the heat network was operating at 35% efficiency.
- Glyn Street Estate
The Glyn Street Estate is a mixed tenure development comprised of two blocks, Dexter House and Muscovy House, in Lambeth, Greater London. The building contains 37 rented flats and 32 leasehold units and was built in 2010.
